About BCSAS
Our Mission
It is the mission of the board and staff of Barry County Substance Abuse Services to work toward a community environment in which substance abuse is less likely to occur, to encourage sound decision-making in those considering substance use, and to assist those living with addictions in achieving sobriety and in establishing a fulfilling and effective lifestyle that supports recovery.

BCSAS began in 1976 under the name of "The Argosy Program", and originally was a rap center in the basement of the “Curtis-E-House”, an historic boarding house that had been acquired by county government. The name was changed to Barry County Substance Abuse and Referral Service in 1979, and finally to Barry County Substance Abuse Services in 1985. The organization was quickly called upon to serve persons under the management of the courts and probation offices of the county. Upon becoming accredited in the first wave of professionalization of substance abuse services that began in 1983, BCSAS increasingly served persons referred by local physicians and industry as well as those involved with the courts. Since 1985 BCSAS has offered prevention programming to the school districts serving Barry County youth. BCSAS was at the forefront of the changes brought about by managed care in the 1990’s, participating in some of the early efforts to provide services through large funding organizations while retaining its community commitment. BCSAS participated as a charter member in the development of Barry Community Resources Network, working to bring the many organizations serving Barry County residents together in an effort to make the best use of our combined services and skills for county residents. Today we look back on a thirty year history with some pride.
