Recovery Services

Recovery Services

“Some have said to me ‘I don’t want to use treatment or AA to recover – I want to do it on my own !’. It’s a natural feeling for those who have felt powerless for a long time. But recovery is like rebuilding a  partially destroyed house, and this would be akin to exclaiming: “I want to rebuild my house, but I want to do it on my own - I don’t want to use tools!”. Well, those who build houses well will tell you that the mark of a good carpenter is that he knows his tools. Moreover, he respects and uses his tools wisely and well and cares for them when he’s through with them. “Doing it on your own” includes using the right tool, i.e. the right treatment, to get the job done. And no one will say that the carpenter did not rebuild the house because he used tools: they’ll marvel at his skill with those tools and think more of him. It is just so for those in recovery: their success is all their own, it is not diminished because they used the resources available to them as tools in their recovery.”  - Brian

Quality Accredited – Medicaid Approved!

Barry County Substance Abuse Services has a program to fit your needs...

  • Assessment and Referral
Assessment required by the courts or human services agencies. This is generally an hour-and-a-half time commitment and is scheduled from 8 am - 5 pm. Assessment results in a report being provided to the referring person offering recommended services needs.

  • Team Review
Your Service Plan will be reviewed by our Professional Team to assure that you get quality care. The Team is composed of your counselor as well as a physician, a psychologist and social worker. This quality step is FREE for you.

  • License Appeal Assessment
Assessment of an individual’s recovery efforts required by a License Appeal Division Hearing Examiner in the course of an appeals hearing to consider possible return of driving privileges. This will usually be accomplished over a two to three hour single interview scheduled between 8 am and 5 pm, but can require an additional hour in some instances.

  • Alcohol Highway Safety Education
Six hours of education focused upon the laws pertaining to drinking and driving in Michigan, alcohol’s impact on driving skills and social problems stemming from drunk driving. Designed for those not needing more intensive intervention. Usually two, three-hour classes from 5 to 8 pm.

  • Individual Counseling
Individual Counseling is designed to develop a plan for staying sober and rebuilding one’s social supports. Many times persons attend once per week for an hour, but additional meetings may be available if desired. Many people participate in peer support (AA) while involved in counseling. The usual out of pocket cost for individual counseling is between $4 and $15 per session depending on the person’s income.

  • Outpatient Treatment
Individual and group sessions are held for those experiencing problems and those in need of therapeutic support. Family counseling is provided for those affected by the addiction of a loved one. The form of outpatient treatment is one of regular "visits", sometimes one visit per week, but often two, generally lasting for fifty minutes. Outpatient Treatment may be in treatment groups, individual counseling or a combination. You have a right to two hours per week of counseling by State law if it should be needed. On average people stay in counseling for six months, but this depends greatly on each persons needs.

  • Intensive Outpatient Program
For those assessed as most likely to benefit from an  intensive counseling experience, IOP provides more powerful group contact designed to assist in establishing sobriety over a six week period of time. IOP meets three times per week for three hours each evening. An individual counseling session every other week and desired peer support/AA involvement are additional commitments for most people enrolled in IOP. People generally pay $3 to $9 per day, or $48 to $144 total out of pocket for IOP.

  • Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program
Our Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program involves those 17 and younger using now and at risk for future problems with drugs/alcohol in education and decision making skills regarding issues related to drug and alcohol use.

  • Suboxone Chemotherapy Counseling
BCSAS works with Dr. Thomas Hoffman, a certified Suboxone physician, to assist those with a narcotics addiction in staying straight and rebuilding their lives. Most people in SCC pay $4 to $8 per counseling hour (medication costs arranged separately).

“Recovery from addiction is a bit like going up a down escalator: If you’re not actively working to move ahead and to move up, you’ll find that you are going backwards and going down. There is no such thing as simply stopping and staying in the same place.”
